Esplanade Timeline

Let us take you on a journey through time together and remember how the Esplanade became more than just a hotel. Since 1925, when the Esplanade first opened its doors to travelers on the Orient Express, bringing worldly glamour to the heart of Zagreb—from the golden twenties with lavish balls and the first movie stars who stayed there, through the sixties when the hotel entered a new era, and the eighties after its reconstruction and numerous innovations that made it the most avant-garde hotel in the country—all the way to today as it celebrates 100 years.

And as we travel through the decades, one thing is clear – the Esplanade is not just a hotel, but a witness to history.

1917.

An international competition was announced, attracting numerous outstanding architects of the time, including the famous Austrian Adolf Loos, who, however, did not win. The winner was the German architect Otto Rehnig, whose original designs were later revised by Dionis Sunko, who is today considered the architect of this Belle Époque architectural masterpiece.

1925.

Construction of the largest hotel in Zagreb took only 26 months. The hotel was intended for passengers of the Orient Express and is therefore located next to the main railway station. At the grand opening on April 22, 1925, around 200 distinguished guests gathered, including the mayor of Zagreb, Heinzel. The hotel's first guest was a businessman from Osijek, Mr. Glück, who is believed to have brought good luck to the hotel with his name.

October 1926

James Hope, the Deputy Speaker of the British Parliament, visited Zagreb and stayed at the Esplanade Hotel.

16 December 1926

The Fanameta film company from Berlin organized a Miss Yugoslavia pageant at the Hotel Esplanade.

4 February 1928

The first Traditional Journalists' Ball, inspired by the Berlin Presseball, was held at the Esplanade Hotel and continued until 1941..

Late 1920s

Charles Lindbergh, the American aviator, explorer, adventurer, and scientist, as well as a Pulitzer Prize winner for his autobiography, stayed at the Esplanade Hotel. In 1927, he became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in the Spirit of St. Louis. Zagreb’s mayor, Heinzel, also stayed at the hotel. The hotel's first guest was a businessman from Osijek, Mr. Glück, who is believed to have brought good luck to the hotel with his name.

January 1929

The famous Russian actor Vladimir Gajdarov, a long-time member of the Moscow Art Theatre and celebrated for his role in the film "Woman on the Rack," stayed at the Esplanade Hotel with his wife, actress Olga Gzovskaya.

1929.

The American star Josephine Baker, a renowned Charleston dancer and singer, who lived in France where she was hailed as the queen of Parisian cabarets, also stayed at the Hotel Esplanade.

January 1935

A three-day congress of hoteliers from across the country was held at the Esplanade Hotel, where discussions focused on the development of tourism. Following the congress, the annual assembly of the Yugoslav Hotelier Association also took place.

1935.

The graduates of the Zagreb Gornji Grad Gymnasium, the oldest and most prestigious school in the country, celebrated their 40th anniversary with a dinner at the Esplanade Hotel.

1917.

The Carnival Olympics was held at the Esplanade Hotel. It was creatively and inventively arranged by dance teacher Štef Keglević, who also operated his dance institute at the hotel. He was in charge of arranging and promoting dance evenings and other events that turned the hotel into a focal point of social life in Zagreb.

April 1937

The Congress of Hotel Owners of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was held at the Esplanade Hotel. The representatives from all nine provinces as well as from the Ministries of Finance, Transport, Trade and Industry, Construction, and other institutions, highlighted the importance placed on the development of the hotel industry as the foundation for tourism development.

February 1938

According to the Jutarnji List daily newspaper, the Indian Prince of Nepal Krishna Shamshere and his wife T.R. Lakshmi stayed at the Esplanade Hotel during their visit to Zagreb.

March 1938

At the Esplanade Hotel, a ceremonial assembly of the Society of Friends of Great Britain was held, presided over by Bishop Antun Bauer.

7 November 1938

Eng. Nikola Kabalin, the Minister of Trade and Industry of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, convened a conference with hotel owners from across the Kingdom of Yugoslavia at the Esplanade Hotel. The following day, on 8 November, an extraordinary general meeting of the Yugoslav Hotel Association took place at the Esplanade Hotel. The meeting addressed topics including organising the hotel industry, investing in hospitality, enhancing the hotel, restaurant, and café services, training professional staff, and joining the International Hotel Association.

1940–1945

During World War II, the hotel serves as the headquarters of the Gestapo and the Wehrmacht. Renowned Italian writer Curzio Malaparte stays here while writing his famous novel. Several hotel employees secretly spy for the partisans, and tragically, when discovered, they are executed.

1940.

Just before the Journalists' Ball at the Esplanade Hotel, a formal reception was held at the Banski Dvori (Ban’s Court) for His Highness Prince Regent Paul and Princess Olga. The princely couple also attended a performance at the Croatian National Theatre and stayed at the Esplanade Hotel.

November 1940

German national football players stayed at the Esplanade Hotel, with some of them arriving directly from the front lines, as reported by the Večer daily. The Yugoslav national football team defeated the German team with a score of 2-0.

March 1941

The Esplanade Hotel hosted the highly successful Aviators' Ball, under the patronage of the Royal Aero Club of the Banovina of Croatia.

February 1943

The German occupiers made great efforts to present the illusion that social life in Zagreb continued as normal during their presence, as if there were no war. In February 1943, they organized a fashion show at the Esplanade Hotel featuring the latest German designs for the upcoming season. The newspaper Novosti reported that the event delighted a large number of distinguished guests from Zagreb.

1945–1960

In the aftermath of the war, the hotel is transformed into a public kitchen, offering meals to those in need, with aluminium plates and cutlery. Over time, the hotel gradually regains its prestige as cultural and business personalities begin to visit, marking the start of its recovery.

Žuži Jelinek presented her elegant, simple, and wearable designs at the Esplanade Hotel, indirectly highlighting the potential of the domestic textile industry.

1961.

The creations of Žuži Jelinek were showcased in the Emerald Ballroom to an enthusiastic audience, with the most famous model of the time, Mira Čutura, modelling them.

1962.

Branko Jakopović visited Vienna and toured the Hotel Inter-Continental, which was the second of its kind in Europe at the time, with the first being in Frankfurt. He pondered the possibility of creating something similar in Zagreb. After a discussion with the hotel’s director, who suggested the option of joining the Inter-Continental corporation, Jakopović collected detailed information and extended an invitation to visit the Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb. In 1962, the hotel underwent rapid renovations, logistical upgrades, and adjustments to align with Inter-Continental standards.

1964.

The Esplanade joins the InterContinental Hotels Corporation, becoming the first hotel in any socialist country to do so. The move proves to be a major success, and the business flourishes. Celebrities, political figures and business leaders arrive, and other InterContinental hotels in socialist countries follow suit. The hotel sets new standards, such as providing soaps, butter and shampoo, encouraging local producers to meet these quality requirements.

Mid-1960s

The renowned American playwright Arthur Miller, famous for All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, and The Crucible, and widely known as the husband of film icon Marilyn Monroe, stayed at the Esplanade Inter-Continental Hotel. Around the same time, the hotel also hosted Italian actress and 1950s sex symbol Silvana Pampanini, Russian-American actor Yul Brynner (who starred in the 1969 film The Battle of Neretva), Ukrainian-American actor Jack Palance, Italian actress Rossana Podestà, English actress Belinda Lee, Italian actress Liana Orfei (the daughter of a renowned circus owner), and many others.

1967.

The first casino in the country is opened at the Esplanade by Miss Italy.

1968.

The hotel was nominated as the best out of 62 Inter-Continental hotels in Europe and the Middle East.

1969.

The greatest footballer of all time, Brazilian football legend Pelé, stayed at the hotel.

1951.

At the time, Bistro Esplanade was the most avant-garde venue in the entire country. Since the Bistro was highly successful, others soon began adopting a similar concept.

May 1988

The hotel joins The Leading Hotels of the World, becoming the first hotel from a socialist country and the only one in Croatia to do so.

1989.

Valentine’s Day was celebrated at the hotel for the first time on February 14.

1989.

The popular Italian dessert tiramisu was first served at the Esplanade Bistro. Since then, it has become a staple in many other restaurants across Croatia.

The Esplanade becomes an independent company, separate from InterContinental Zagreb.

1990.

The first free elections in Yugoslavia bring the Croatian Democratic Union to power, led by President Franjo Tuđman.

1991.

Croatia proclaims independence, and the war begins. The hotel serves as a headquarters for journalists and accommodates a group of refugees from Vukovar in December 1991. The hotel faces a period of decline, and one of its employees is killed during the conflict, later being recognised as a hero. The hotel provides shelter for guests in the basement restaurant, Taverna Croatica, and offers a rare macrobiotic menu, which gains attention in American newspapers.

Alija Izetbegović, the first President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stayed at the Esplanade Hotel. Douglas Hurd, a British Conservative politician from Margaret Thatcher’s government, stayed at the Esplanade Hotel.

The hotel is awarded five stars by the Croatian Ministry of Tourism according to new classification standards. Despite a challenging economic situation due to the Kosovo crisis and NATO strikes on Yugoslavia, the hotel continues to excel.

1 January 2000

The hotel joins the SRS hotel reservation system as part of its deluxe collection, becoming the first Croatian hotel to do so.

2002.

The Esplanade Hotel was acquired by the Austrian company WSF Group, based in Vienna, which specializes in hospitality, real estate, and golf course development. In November of that same year, the hotel closed for a complete renovation.

Alain Finkielkraut, a distinguished French historian, philosopher, writer, and humanist, stayed at the Esplanade Hotel.

1994.

The hotel reopens following a 1.5-year-long renovation under the name The Regent Esplanade Zagreb, with a new restaurant, Zinfandel’s, and a Cocktail and Lounge Bar, Esplanade 1925, alongside the renovated Le Bistro.

30 July 2004

The President of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Stjepan Mesić, visits the newly reopened hotel.

The hotel closes for a complete renovation, assigning MKV Design for the interior design.

The hotel joins the Regent International Hotels family, becoming the first Regent hotel in Europe.

After three foreign directors, the position of General Manager of the Regent Esplanade Hotel was taken over by Ivica Max Krizmanić, a native of Zagreb and then Deputy Director, Front Office, and Revenue Manager of the hotel. Krizmanić joined the Esplanade Hotel in 1991 after returning from the battlefield, starting as a student filling in as a doorman for one month. Originally a mechanical engineering student who never completed his studies, he fell in love with the hotel and steadily advanced in his career. It is interesting to mention that his first encounter with the Esplanade Hotel was as a child when, at the age of three, his father Ivan Max Krizmanić—who worked at the hotel’s reception for 30 years—brought him to visit.

Ana Grgić became the first female head chef in the hotel's history. After completing her hospitality education, she volunteered under the then-head chef to gain culinary experience. Through dedication, creativity, and ambition, Ana progressed over the years, and in 2012, following the departure of Maltese chef Jeffrey J. Vella, hotel director Ivica Max Krizmanić appointed her as the executive chef of the Regent Esplanade.

2014

Two highly significant events occurred. A meeting between the Hotel’s Director Ivica Max Krizmanić and the South Korean ambassador His Excellency Hyung-Won Suh sparked the idea of introducing the relatively unknown and somewhat exotic Korean cuisine to Croatia. The visit of five top chefs from the Korean Food Institute, led by Mrs. Sook-Ja Joon, the head of the royal kitchen in Korea, was soon organised. The chefs stayed at the Esplanade for five days. During their stay, they collaborated with the hotel’s chefs in preparing a presentation of Korean cuisine. The guests of Le Bistro had the opportunity to taste their creations.

Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, one of the richest people in the world, arrived in Zagreb with his private jet and stayed at the Esplanade Hotel. During his visit, the hotel arranged a nighttime city tour with the newest bicycles for the prince and his entourage of 40 guests. The hotel also hosted a gala dinner at Medvedgrad castle, prepared by Executive Chef Ana Grgić Tomić and her team. When the media revealed that the prince was staying at the Esplanade, the country’s leadership expressed their interest to meet with him.

This event was the only one of its kind in the city during the Advent season and drew in a large number of visitors. Entry was only allowed with valid COVID-19 certificates, resulting in long lines of interested attendees that often stretched all the way to King Tomislav Square. Alongside Esplanade's Executive Chef Ana Grgić Tomić, several renowned chefs ran culinary booths, offering visitors creative street-style dishes. Throughout the month-long event, guests were treated to fantastic performances by musicians and DJs.

Over the past decade, the Esplanade has hosted numerous global celebrities, including Hollywood actors Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Kevin Spacey, and Kate Beckinsale; musicians Enrique Iglesias, Bryan Adams, Nick Cave, and Michael Bublé; and political leaders such as former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. King Charles III (then Prince) was so impressed by Chef Grgić Tomić's risotto that he requested the recipe. President Emmanuel Macron praised the cuisine and service during a meticulously organised four-course lunch in the magnificent Emerald Ballroom. The Danish royal family also commended the cuisine, adding their family Malbec wine to the hotel's renowned wine list, making the Esplanade the only place in Croatia to offer this royal vintage. The dedication of the staff, who consistently exceed expectations with personal gestures, plays a crucial role in creating the unique atmosphere of the Esplanade Hotel. When a royal guest urgently needed a tie, General Manager Krizmanić lent his own, thus averting a diplomatic incident.

Over the past few years, the Esplanade Hotel received numerous accolades, including being named Croatia's Hotel of the Year and Best European Historic Hotel in 2019. In 2022, Condé Nast Traveller included the Esplanade in their list of the top 10 hotels in Central Europe. That same year, the World Luxury Hotel Awards recognised Ivica Max Krizmanić as the Best General Manager in Southeast Europe, and Executive Chef Ana Grgić Tomić was honoured as Gault&Millau's Chef of the Year in Croatia. In 2023, Zinfandel’s Restaurant was awarded the title of Best European Hotel Restaurant, and Ana's sustainable cuisine earned Croatia its first Green Michelin Star. Her work as an ambassador for WWF's Fish Forward project and the development of a food waste management program further highlight the hotel's commitment to ecological practices. Additionally, the hotel's PR and Marketing Director Sanda Sokol was named PR of the Year at the European Hotel Awards 2024 in Copenhagen. In March 2025, during the Gault & Millau Croatia ceremony, hotel director Ivica Max Krizmanić was recognised for the Esplanade Hotel's 100th anniversary.

In celebration of the Esplanade Hotel's 100th anniversary, the "Circle of Light" light installation was unveiled on the hotel's façade, marking the official opening of the Festival of Lights Zagreb. Sensational 3D projections, created in collaboration with top Croatian and German artists under the guidance of the Zagreb Tourist Board, brought the elegance and glamour of bygone eras to life on the hotel's historic architecture. In honour of the anniversary and the festival's opening, guests from Zagreb's social scene gathered in the enchanting ambiance of the Esplanade Hotel to enjoy a magnificent light projection and a display of the hotel's historical moments on the ceiling of the Emerald Ballroom.
